The emblematic Community of Cilento is located in the Campania Region, in the territory of the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Monti Alburni. The community finds its center at the Municipality of Pollica.

The community occupies an area of around 2,400 km2 and includes a population of around 270,000 inhabitants. Located in the southern part of Italy, Cilento can be considered a mountainous sub-region of the Campania region. Cilento Park, Vallo di Diano and Monti Alburni, make up a large part of the community, which extends over a surface area of 180,000 hectares. It is here that the “father” of the Mediterranean diet, Ancel Keys, carried out his studies. Today, the Study Center of the Mediterranean Diet “Angelo Vassallo” can be found in Pioppi, an Italian hamlet in the municipality of Pollica.

It was this great American nutritionist who defined this area as the “triangle of long life”: Up until at least forty years ago, the dietary regime in Cilento consisted of fruit, vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, legumes, fish and pasta.

Famous for its crystal-clear sea, golden beaches, sweet climate, Pollica, a Cilento municipality overlooking the Gulf of Palinuro, Pollica represents Italy among the emblematic communities of the Mediterranean Diet.

SAFEGUARDING MEASURES

The emblematic community is very active in the area through specific initiatives aimed at ensuring the protection of the Mediterranean diet and its founding values ​​in the medium-long term. Among the many activities, the community periodically organizes the following initiatives:

  • the White Night of the Mediterranean Diet, held in November of each year;
  • the Mediterranean Diet Festival, held throughout the summer;
  • the Living Museum of the Mediterranean Diet, housed in Palazzo Capuano, in the hamlet of Pioppi;
  • the annual prize to the Ambassadors of the Mediterranean Diet in the world, conferred to the personalities who distinguish themselves in their role of transmission of the Mediterranean Diet at an international level.
