The Moroccan community of the Mediterranean Diet is located in Chefchaouen, capital city of the homonymous province.
Located northwest of Morocco, it has an altitude of 600m and it is defined in the north by the Mediterranean Sea with a stretching coastline of 120km. Chefchaouen is situated in a remote area and it is renowned for the largest conifer forest in Morocco, as well as one of the most important biological areas of interest.
Chefchaouen is known worldwide for its blue painted houses, like the famous Indian “blue city” in Jodhpur, in Rajasthan. Rich in excellent typical products such as olive oil, goat’s cheese, and dried figs, Chefchaouen began a sustainable development project with the objective to preserve its rich food farming culture.
Keep in mind that in March, 2010, the Declaration to support the candidacy of the Mediterranean diet in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage took place in Chefchaouen, representing the four proponent emblematic communities: Italy, Spain, Morocco, Greece.
